Community Leader/Advocate

Role Overview: The Community Leader/Advocate at Brave serves as a bridge between the organization and the community, particularly focusing on advocating for homeless veterans’ rights, needs, and inclusion. This role involves community engagement, public speaking, and leading efforts to raise awareness and support for Brave’s mission.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Community Engagement: Foster relationships with local residents, businesses, faith-based groups, and other community organizations to build support for veterans’ housing initiatives.
  • Advocacy: Represent Brave in public forums, community meetings, and policy discussions, advocating for policies and resources that benefit homeless veterans. This includes speaking at city council meetings, participating in community boards, or engaging with media.
  • Public Awareness: Develop and lead campaigns to raise awareness about veterans’ homelessness, the work of Brave, and how the community can contribute. This might involve organizing events, workshops, or informational sessions.
  • Volunteer Leadership: Inspire and mobilize community members to volunteer, either through direct involvement with Brave or by supporting veterans in other ways like mentoring or community-building activities.
  • Partnership Development: Identify and cultivate partnerships that can offer additional support, resources, or influence for veterans’ housing and welfare. This includes working with local government, non-profits, and service providers.
  • Education and Training: Educate the community on veterans’ issues, the impact of homelessness, and how to support veterans effectively, potentially through workshops or informational materials.
  • Feedback Collection: Serve as a liaison for community feedback to Brave, ensuring that the organization’s programs are responsive to community needs and perceptions.
  • Event Coordination: Organize community events that can range from fundraisers to awareness days, ensuring these events align with Brave’s mission and engage the community positively.
  • Cultural Competence: Promote cultural understanding and sensitivity towards veterans, helping the community appreciate the unique challenges they face post-service.
  • Strategic Community Planning: Work with the organization’s leadership to integrate community feedback into strategic planning, ensuring community-driven solutions are part of Brave’s approach.
Qualifications:
  • Experience in community organizing, advocacy, or public engagement, particularly in social services or veterans’ affairs.
  • Strong public speaking and leadership abilities to rally community support.
  • A deep understanding of or connection to the veteran community.
