Government Relations Specialist

Role Overview: The Government Relations Specialist at Brave is pivotal in advocating for policies and initiatives that support housing solutions for homeless veterans. This position focuses on building and maintaining relationships with government entities at local, state, and federal levels to facilitate funding, policy support, and community partnerships.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Policy Advocacy: Monitor, analyze, and advocate for legislative and regulatory changes that could benefit homeless veterans’ housing initiatives. Engage in lobbying efforts to promote policies that support affordable and supportive housing.
  • Relationship Building: Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and other relevant bodies. This includes regular meetings, presentations, and participation in policy discussions.
  • Grant Acquisition: Identify, apply for, and secure government grants and funding opportunities specifically aimed at housing and support services for veterans.
  • Community Liaison: Serve as a bridge between government bodies and the communities we serve, ensuring that the voices and needs of homeless veterans are represented in policy-making processes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all housing projects and initiatives comply with current laws and regulations. Advise on compliance matters related to building codes, zoning laws, and housing standards.
  • Public Speaking and Representation: Represent Brave at government hearings, community meetings, and public forums to advocate for veterans’ housing rights and needs.
  • Strategic Planning: Work with the leadership team to develop strategic plans for engaging with government entities, including long-term advocacy goals and immediate tactical responses to policy changes.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed reports on legislative activities, outcomes of advocacy efforts, and potential impacts on the organization’s mission to house homeless veterans.
  • Educational Outreach: Educate stakeholders about the specific housing challenges faced by veterans, including the need for trauma-informed housing solutions, mental health support, and employment assistance.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Proven experience in government relations, public policy, or a related field, with a focus on housing, veterans’ affairs, or community development.
  • Strong understanding of legislative processes at various government levels.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in grant writing or securing government funding is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a commitment to the mission of supporting homeless veterans.
